Linde Werdelin is mighty proud of their first year at Baselworld. It marks a big occasion, a true entrance into the world not only making watches, but being part of the watch industry. So proud that they have enlisted bloggers like me and RJ at Fratellowatches.com to share with you the novelties and personalities you would have seen if you were at Basel this year. The people at Linde Werdelin are people. More importantly they understand good watches and they understanding modern ways of selling good watches. They are of the few luxury watch brands selling online. This is because they understand the modern market, as many older watch makers still poke at the Internet with a queazy face just as a youngster would to a plate of liver and onions.
To keep more of a haute horlogerie theme - I also like the Breguet Reine de Naples. Remember, this is replacing a diamond ring, after all. The natural Mother of Pearl dial is luminous - and with the hand appliqued fancy Breguet numerals, and pear shaped diamond at 6 o'clock, the little details on the dial face will keep her gazing and loving for years to come. The 117 diamond set upon the bezel, at approximately .99 cttw, are just an added bonus. Elegantly finished, this watch, to me, speaks much more of love than a simple diamond ring.
As you can see from the images, the Torpedo Pirata line uses a unique seven piece watch case. The idea is that over time the owner can alternate between materials to give the watch a different looks. Available materials include titanium, steel, bronze, and various shades of gold. A typical watch is made up of a mix of a few of them. If you look at the watch closely, you'll find all the nods to piratey ways. The dial is meant to resemble antique sea instruments, notable the compass. The chronograph pushers look like the tip of a blunderbuss gun or cannon muzzle. The grooved crown looks like a cannon ball or a navigational globe. Then you have the lugs which are meant to resemble the prow on a ship. Taken together, the rich design produces a lasting appeal to enthusiasts of historic boats as pirate tales alike.
The best watches to compare this with are the Casio Pathfinder watches (one of which I reviewed recently). The watches both share the desire to go outside and rough it, are products are large high volume companies,as well as offer a bevy of major functions that include:
Rolex GMT watches
The Kupe's Voyage watch is part of a limited edition of just 10 watches - this is ultra exclusive, and you can be the proud owner just by entering. The watch is based on the base Magrette Regattare watch, but with the beautiful engraved bezel. What I love about Magrette watches is their use of Auckland area craftspeople to give the watch a special character not found in other brands. A great example is the hand engraved bezel. Follow the symbols to tell the mythic story of how Kupe discovered what would eventually be known as New Zealand - distinctly New Zealand experience that you won't find on any other watch. The special giveaway webpage is further designed very well, another testament to this boutique watch brand's attention to detail.
I wanted to bring a watch to your attention, something I picked up this week. Through a little random web-surfing, I found a small company in North Carolina, owner-operated, called Bernhardt Watches. It's run by Fred B. (Bernhardt) Amos, who makes extremely small runs of really quality tool-style watches, with Swiss ETA movements mostly assembled here in The States.
MM: How would you encourage younger generations to embrace watches? How can they express themselves, as you have?
