I am going to talk about a patently lavish, intentionally outrageous, and easily offensive timepiece covered in diamonds that I am kind of into. This totally one-of-a-kind creation is new for 2015 and is the Jacob & Co. Billionaire watch that founder Jacob Arabo produced in collaboration with Italian Flavio Briatore's Billionaire fashion label. I first wrote about the Jacob & Co. Billionare Watch with more background information here.
Anyhow, "the wave of new smartwatches" – as HM&C calls it – is very much here, and it is slowly but surely turning out to be much more of a tsunami than a drop in the ocean. And while that in itself is no news, it is very unusual to see a high-end watch manufacturer address the issue with such an open assault. The point they make is very valid, as the mechanical timepieces – even those with simple functions – are incredible works of engineering; and so ones with additional functions, enhanced ergonomics and autonomy really do represent the finest achievements in the industry. And yet, the battle between smartwatches and some of the finest in traditional horology is Marvel superheroes against the Spartan Leonidas' army at Thermopylae: a few with magic-like superpowers against a couple hundred battle-tried veterans armed with experience and traditional weaponry. In this case, it's colorful touch screens and wireless technology against meshing wheels and chamfered metal. In essence, it is a senseless fight and one that I wish would not be happening in the first place – in an idealistic way I wish they could "co-exist peacefully".
Ariel Adams: Some argue that watch prices have become unsustainably inflated over the last few years, but from a marketing standpoint it is very difficult for a brand to reduce prices. I think it was a bold and wise move for TAG Heuer to do this. Two questions, what prompted this decision and was it difficult to make? What do you hope the message to consumers will be?
My biggest worry about the Montblanc e-Strap was that it was going to be too large. It is a legitimate concern to believe that some item attached to the bottom of your watch might feel like an unwelcome tumor. In fact, the clever design of the Montblanc e-Strap in terms of its dimensions as well as how it attaches to the strap make it not feel nearly as thick or "extra-on-the-wrist" as it might appear in images at first. I further found wearing it on the specially made watch strap to be rather comfortable. The actual dimensions of the steel Montblanc e-Strap are 40mm long by 14.2mm wide and just 9mm thick.
Watch De Luxe: For the local population, TAG Heuer is probably the leader in the luxury watch sector. But this particular shop is famous for being the only point of sales for a unique selection of other luxury brands, such as Cartier, IWC, Panerai, Breitling, etc., and therefore, we have a nice mix of sales of several brands. We are the leader of the luxury watch retail sector in Hungary.
That is a good question, and I am not sure there is one satisfying answer. You are for sure correct that over the last few years there has been a marked increase in the amount of projects on crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that have been about wrist watches. To be honest, I think that what you are seeing is part of a larger trend, but since because you might be paying more attention to watches rather than other products, it might appear as though this phenomenon is limited to just timepieces.
Of the three straps we had in, this one was probably my least favorite, just due to the feel on the wrist. Don't get me wrong, it was a comfortable strap, it just made for a much bulkier feel on the wrist than I (and my shirt cuffs) tend to favor. On a bigger wrist, or perhaps destined solely for warmer-weather wear, this could be a decent option.

There are no words however about notifications – such as emails, alarms, calls and others - so what the Swatch Touch Zero One presently appears to be is primarily a fitness / activity tracker that will indeed register your activities and with its bespoke app create reports on it. As a first step it is a very interesting proposition and one that marks an industry giant's entry into the smartwatch market. Price for the entirely Swiss made Swatch Touch Zero One is expected to be around 149 Swiss Francs or around 9. swatch.com
Whereas the high-end watch industry has for long been largely based on the co-operation between specialist craftsmen – working either within the company or at external suppliers – when it comes to independents, most all of the tasks are performed in-house... and for just a handful of independent watchmakers, those tasks are performed not by dozens or even a few, but by just one craftsman. Today, we are looking at AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants) member Hungarian independent watchmaker Aaron Becsei's proprietary movement, found in the Bexei Dignitas watch.
