Why Don’t You Discuss Watch Movements In Reviews More?

Greubel Forsey produces many watches that are a close neighbor to million, proving themselves to be harsh mistresses. As unattainable as she is in this shiny black dress, this black titanium piece of horologia did steal my heart when spending just a few romantic moments together at SIHH 2013. Is it but a mere horological flirt? Perhaps my tastebuds should have never been exposed to this type of rich flavor? Am I doomed forever to see anything but the very top tier of timepieces as lust-worthy? I don't know. I still have a sensible side that gets excited about a new cool Casio watch, but that doesn't change the fact that nothing inside of me is absolutely repulsed at the idea that in some universes, spending the wealth required to purchase something like a Greubel Forsey watch, is acceptable.

Oddly enough, Ressence does not mention how water resistant the watch is. You'd think that would be one of the first things to brag about in a totally sealed watch with liquid already inside of it. Some of the world's top diving watches contain liquid so that the chambers aren't filled with pressurized air. I guess I am saying, when are we gonna see a Ressence dive watch? The Type 3 case is 44mm wide in titanium and sapphire crystal. The dial elements are also in titanium and DLC coated black. It isn't clear whether or not the brand will build the gray-colored dial as well as the cool black version.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Classic Small

MB: I don’t know. I live the present, I am writing my story. This is my autobiography, not a science-fiction novel. What I mean by that is I’m not trying to imagine what watch making will be in 10-50-100 years; I’m just enjoying myself expressing myself. It's interesting to consider that in a Christie’s sale when an HM4 Thunderbolt will come up for sale will people say: ‘Crazy design from a crazy guy who lived 100 years ago’; 'the beginning of a new era of watch making which then became something signifcant; or else 'the beginning of a trend which died later on'. There is no way I will know and, honestly, I can’t start wondering what people are going to say about my brand in a hundred years because that is not what I set out to do.

The good folks at the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, for you non-Canadians) have aired a short audio documentary chronicling Canada's last watchmakers school - The École Nationale de L'horlogerie. This Québec-based school is quite small, only three teachers and no more than 15 students, but it represents Canada's last watchmaking stand and its graduates are still in high demand.

Panerai Luminor 1950

Please give congrats to Jim G. of Oklahoma City, OK who was the lucky winner of the Yes Inca watch that we gave-away last month during March here on aBlogtoWatch. We hope he uses it well, and thanks to all who entered.

Of course, being a Bulova, the Bulova Hack not all just style. I would expect some impeccable construction in the 40mm stainless steel case (only 10.5 mm thick), protecting the Miyota quartz movement with a water resistance rating of 30m (so, not quite military-grade in that regard). The case is topped with an acrylic crystal (part vintage nod, part cost-cutting I'm guessing), and comes mounted on a green canvas strap (which appears to have a leather backing) tucked into the 20mm lugs. Coming in at a price of 0, this is an affordable military-style watch that has some actual roots in the Army.

Fortunately for us, the Zetios lineup (on which this edition is based, if you recall) has the technical chops to match the design. Tucked away within the case you have a DD 4500 automatic mechanical movement with a 40-hour power reserve, which drives the aforementioned chronograph, as well as the large date display. On top of the case you have a curved sapphire crystal; around back you've got a flat sapphire set into the screwed-in case back. Lume is present on the dial and hands (apologies, we weren't able to locate a lume picture), and you do have a limited bit of water resistance (rated at 30m, so don't go swimming with this one).

Most of the chase boats had 1,000 horsepower. That says a lot about how fast the race is now.

Naturally, these timepieces aren’t designed to be serious workhorses, so you professional divers best look elsewhere for equipment you might need to rely on for your life – but for the rest of us, these are great looking, lighthearted pieces you could certainly wear to the beach or while snorkeling without giving it a second thought.  All of the pieces have a 200M depth rating, which is more than enough for seaside activities.

This is under the assumption of course that nothing else is done. Practically speaking, this time is spread out as other tasks are done concurrently. The finishing process has to be the part of the creation of each watch that is the most time intensive. Every part, aside from functioning correctly, has to be beautiful as well.

Omega is very proud of its co-axial escapement and even goes as far as to dub it “The Perfect Mechanical Movement”. Simply put, the co-axial escapement, invented by Englishman George Daniels, is a modification of the traditional escapement by using three instead of two pallets. Such a design significantly reduces friction and, in theory, makes lubrication unnecessary. Practically speaking however, what the co-axial escapement really means for watch buyers are longer warranties (Omega offers four years) and longer service intervals. In any case, this rather nicely executed commercial by Omega celebrates its co-axial movement and is well worth watching especially if you are a fan of the brand.

Ariel told me something that he heard me repeating quite often, and that was, that after coming from a meeting with a particular watch brand, I would utter the words, "I thought I hated that brand until I held their watches in my hand".

The Rolex Milgauss case is 40mm with lug to lug measurements coming at mere 48mm.  As a result, the watch wears rather small which also means that it will fit most guys.  For me, unless I previously wore one of my larger watches, the 40mm case does not bother me.  Also, because the Rolex Milgauss weighs in at just under 150 grams, any smallish feelings tend to disappear quickly since you can definitely feel that you are wearing a heavy and solidly built timepiece.  The bracelet is of the same steel with polished center links.  The adjustment of the screwed links is easily done and the bracelet size can be further slightly adjusted in a breeze with the Easy Link.  This is a wonderful Rolex innovation that I often use.  Essentially, it allows the bracelet to grow or shrink by 5mm in a few seconds by simply opening the clasp and pulling on one end to release the easy link, or folding it to hide it.  The whole thing works simply and brilliantly.

When you think of Bulova, you very likely think of their highly accurate Precisionist line. While those are of interest, today I'd like to focus in on a line that is actually rather storied in their lineup - the Accutron. This is a lineup that first came to be in the 1960's, and it's where the tuning fork made it's entrance, helping to create greater accuracy in the quartz movement. Today, we'll look at one of the more refined pieces in the current lineup, the Bulova Accutron Amerigo.

Rolex Datejust II And Rolex Day-Date II Watch Reviews Wrist Time Reviews

Why Aren’t Mechanical Watches More Advanced?

To sum up, I collect watches because I enjoy wearing them. If one model in my collection increases in value, then cool, otherwise, I don't care since I got it because I really like it and I wear it. Rare exception to the rule are pretty much all Patek Philippe and some Rolex models which in the long run have high probability of increasing in value. That is one reason (not the main reason) why these two brands' watches are high on my list, every time I am ready to acquire a new piece...

Water resistant to 50 meters, the Emergency II watch isn't meant for any serious time underwater. The dial comes in three colors, being black, yellow, and orange. Over the dial is a sapphire crystal and attached to the case is either a titanium Professional bracelet or a Breitling Diver Pro III rubber strap.

Patek Philippe

The sale of the strap is almost over and we are about sold out. There are a few left and we wanted to give as many aBlogtoWatch followers a chance to order one. So here are some images of the straps on the strap maker's wrist. It is difficult to get a grasp of them in images. They are made to look a bit worn, but they are of a very high quality and hand-dyed. We hope you enjoy them. Price is about 0 plus shipping.
